ortho for children

Orthodontic treatment can be a crucial part of your child’s oral health care. Teeth that work together make it possible to bite and chew properly. The beautiful smile that results from child orthodontic treatment is the outward sign of good oral health and sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy teeth.

Early Evaluation

An early evaluation in child orthodontics refers to the practice of having a child's first orthodontic assessment at an early age, typically around the age of 7. It is recommended children receive their first orthodontic evaluation by this age to assess their dental and facial development and identify any potential orthodontic issues.

Phase 1 and 2

Phase 1 Treatment - Early Treatment

Phase 2 Treatment - Comprehensive Treatment

Phase 2 Treatment - Comprehensive Treatment

Phase 1 treatment occurs during the early mixed dentition stage when a child has a combination of primary (baby) and permanent (adult) teeth.

The main goal of Phase 1 is to address specific dental issues and guide the growth of the jaws to create more favorable conditions for the eruption of permanent teeth.

Phase 1 treatment may be recommended for children as young as age 6 to 10, depending on their individual needs.

Common issues treated during Phase 1 include jaw discrepancies, crossbites, crowding, habits like thumb sucking, and creating space for incoming permanent teeth.

Functional appliances, palatal expanders, partial braces, and retainers are examples of appliances used during Phase 1 treatment.

Phase 2 Treatment - Comprehensive Treatment

Phase 2 Treatment - Comprehensive Treatment

Phase 2 Treatment - Comprehensive Treatment

Phase 2 treatment typically begins when most of the child's permanent teeth have erupted, usually around ages 11 to 13 or older.

The primary goal of Phase 2 is to achieve a fully aligned bite and improve the overall aesthetics and function of the smile.

During Phase 2, the orthodontist may use comprehensive braces or clear aligners to fine-tune the tooth positions and correct any remaining orthodontic issues.

Phase 2 treatment aims to create a stable and harmonious bite that will last into adulthood.

It's important to note that not all children will require two-phase orthodontic treatment. Some children may only need comprehensive orthodontic treatment (Phase 2) once all their permanent teeth have erupted. The decision to proceed with two-phase treatment is based on the child's specific orthodontic needs and the best timing for intervention.

Child ortho treatment options

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces consist of metal brackets and wires that are bonded to the teeth. Braces apply gentle pressure to gradually move the teeth into their correct positions. They are highly effective in treating a wide range of orthodontic problems.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are removable, transparent trays that are custom-made to fit the child's teeth. They offer a more discreet alternative to traditional braces and are popular among older children and teenagers.
